Realizing Throughput Guarantees in a Differentiated Services Network

چکیده
This paper discusses techniques for achieving desired throughput guarantees in the Internet that supports diierentiated services framework. Dii-serv framework proposes using diierent drop precedences to achieve soft service guarantees over Internet. However, it has been observed that the drop precedences by themselves cannot achieve the desired target rates because of the strong interaction of the transport protocol with packet drops in the network. This paper proposes and evaluates a number of techniques to better achieve the throughput guarantees in such networks. The proposed techniques consider (a) modifying the transport protocol at the sender, (b) modifying the marking strategies at the marker and (c) modifying the dropping policies at the router. It is shown that these techniques improve the likelihood of achieving the desired throughput guarantees and also improve the service diierentiation.

متن کاملTheories and Models for Internet Quality of Service
Abstract— We survey recent advances in theories and models for Internet Quality of Service (QoS). We start with the theory of network calculus, which lays the foundation for support of deterministic performance guarantees in networks, and illustrate its applications to integrated services, differentiated services, and streaming media playback delays. We also present mechanisms and architecture ...
متن کاملA Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks
Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...
متن کاملStateless RD Network Services
Rate-Delay (RD) Network Services constitute a promising differentiated-services architecture for multi-provider networks, by offering users a choice between high throughput or low queuing delay at bottleneck links. An RD router provides service differentiation via transmission scheduling and by managing two FIFO queues. To ensure strict delay bounds, an RD router tracks arrival times of packets...
متن کاملA Simulation Study of the Impact of Mobility on Performance in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks∗
This paper presents a comprehensive study of the impact of mobility on the throughput and delay achieved by a flow in a mobile ad hoc network operating with multiple levels of traffic priority in a Differentiated Services (DiffServ) Internet. We analyze, through simulation, the effect of mobility on the throughput and delay under various mobility scenarios and load conditions. The results show ...
